Virginia Board Considers Performance of FEES by Speech
Language Pathologists
Among the items for
discussion at its June 3, 2010, meeting, the Virginia Board of
Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology discussed the appropriateness
of speech-language pathologists performing Flexible Endoscopic
Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) independently. The Virginia Academy
of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery provided comments in opposition to the proposal, citing patient safety and care
concerns without supervision by an otolaryngologist. As a result, the
Board voted to draft a guidance document that requires physician
supervision and proper training, and states that they may not administer
medications or anesthetize a patient.
